1990 Suzuki GSX-R750/1100 Turbo | Power Struggle

Say hello to a Swedish fighter with the kind of street cred the cast of Mob Wives lusts after. Far from watered down, what stands in front of you is the creation of Sweden’s Fredrik Steen. His idea to turn a classic roller into a policeman’s nightmare started with a simple ride on a turbo bike. Not long after Fredrik dreamt about nothing else. Turning dreams into reality,though, materialized over a long and arduous journey that began with a moderately maintained 1990 GSX-R750 and the first of many Gixxer 1100 motors. As experienced with the SSB turbo ‘Busa, going the boost route does not come easy.
To the dismay of a former girlfriend, the first engine was disassembled, looked over and rebuilt with JE pistons and a new cylinder bank on the kitchen table. When it came time for the test fire things went south and the engine imploded. Left with the decision to forgo the upcoming summer riding season or buy a ready-to-go motor, he chose the latter,


“I found an engine that was rebuilt from scratch for drag racing. It was 310 miles away but I wanted it and took the car to pick it up,” said Fredrik.
Better than before, the beefed-up 1157cc replacement repped a raucous history with a former 460 HP turbo drag bike. Figuring replacement of a large turbo with a smaller Volvo 19T turbo would secure reliability Fredrick again reached the point of test firing his second motor. Failure. Motor partially junked, a third powerplant search commenced. After finding yet another already-built Suzuki 1100 engine upgraded with a forged Falicon crank, Carrillo rods and more, the best parts from each of the three motors combined forces,
“In two years I built three engines and a chassis but had yet to design a motor that lasted long enough to be dynoed,” said Fredrik.
Fredrik’s reformed mobster is not one to cross without serious firepower unless you’d like to be left in the dust.

Third time turned out to be the charm. Motor almost ready, exhaust piping, manifolds, a plenum and intercooler were fabricated. A TiAL wastegate and dump valve completed the turbo system and Mikuni CV carburetors metered fuel into the combustion chambers. A claimed 301 HP and 185 lb-ft of torque and it didn’t take long to realize an extended swingarm was required to keep the front end down. A six-inch over swingarm extended the wheelbase and helped plant the front. Mechanically sound, it was time for a polishing.

Fredrik felt the only theme mean enough to support his motor was a toast to classic Hollywood muscle. The two-tone look played off the fight between good and bad all scripted gangsters struggle with and added to this formal fighter. Like the gun-toting characters on the bodywork, Fredrik’s reformed mobster is not one to cross without serious firepower unless you’d like to be left in the dust.
